In-House Lab and Pharmacy
In-House Lab Services
Any time your pet requires medical attention it can be a scary time for both you as the pet owner and your pet. Often, lab diagnostics are needed in order to properly diagnose, evaluate, and treat your pet. Having in-house lab services can help get you answers fast, which means a veterinarian can work toward treatment sooner. Below, let's take a look at some common in-house lab and pharmacy services we offer at West Toledo Animal Hospital.
In-House Lab
It is helpful to have an in-house lab onsite at our veterinary practice. Not only does this mean your lab results are tested and diagnosed by local professionals, but you get the results fast. Quick results can mean that treatment begins sooner, helping your pet recover quickly.
Blood Work
Blood work is often the start of several systemic diagnoses. The blood from an animal can help determine if organ function is correct, and if the appropriate platelets, cells, and mineral levels coincide with a healthy pet. When our veterinarian suspects an illness or condition, often clues in the blood work will help lead us to an accurate diagnosis. Blood work can be used to determine thyroid disease, genetic disease, organ malfunction, or even disease such as Lyme or Parvo. Often, blood work is quick, painless, and easy for your pet.
Cytology
Sometimes a pet will develop a growth or a tumor of an unknown substance. Our veterinarian will commonly take a small sample of the tumor to be sent to the lab for testing. A panel of diagnostic tests will be performed on the sample in order to determine the makeup of the particular growth. This can be used to determine if a growth is benign or malignant and can often lead to a quick diagnosis and potential treatment.
Pharmacy
Once a diagnosis is determined for your pet, our veterinarian will often prescribe medication for treatment. While it is certainly possible to order medication from an off-site location, it is faster and more effective to have a veterinary practice that has an in-house pharmacy service to provide medication quickly. The sooner your pet can begin treatment, the sooner your pet can recover. Having an in-house pharmacy is also useful for creating medications in various forms. Often, a pharmacist can reconstitute a medication to create a liquid for easier dosage and administration.
Any time your pet has an injury or illness it can be a scary time. Working with a veterinary practice that has an in-house lab service and pharmacy can help take some of the waiting game out of the equation. With an in-house lab service, we are able to get you accurate results fast, so that we can begin treatment quickly. The sooner your pet can receive treatment, the sooner your pet will be on the mend.
