Pet Oral Health
Your pet's oral health is just as important as their overall health to us. Many oral and non-oral health issues can be detected and treated early at oral health exams. During your pet's oral exam, our veterinarian will check the jaw, gums, and teeth to make sure they look healthy. They may also suggest getting your pet's teeth cleaned.
Oral Issues to Look Out For
Here are several oral issues to look out for that may cause health issues for your cat or dog:
- Less of an appetite
- Swelling around the mouth
- Bad breath
- Pain around or in the mouth
- Loose or broken teeth
- Discolored teeth
You also want to watch for any changes in your pet's behavior, since this can also be a sign that they are not feeling well or in pain.
Causes of Pet Dental Issues
There are some causes of dental issues to look out for as well. These include:
- Tumors or cysts in the mouth
- Roots and teeth that are broken
- Fractured jaw
- Infected teeth
- Cleft palate
- Periodontal disease
Bring your pet in to us if they have any of the above conditions. Periodontal disease is the most common dental health issue in cats and dogs. Most pets have signs of periodontal disease by the time they are three years old. A detailed dental cleaning and X-rays can help determine the severity of the disease. Get your pet in early for a dental checkup can also help prevent the disease from worsening.
Dental Care With Anesthesia
Pet dental care requires anesthesia to keep your animal and the staff safe. Since your animal does not understand what is being done, they may try to get away or bite. To keep everyone safe and make sure our dental care is performed smoothly, anesthesia will be used. Most pets can go home the same day as their procedure. We will also monitor your pet before, during, and after their procedure to make sure they are safe.
Dental Care at Home
We also recommend you brush your pet's teeth at home to keep their gums and teeth healthy in between oral health visits. One of our veterinarians would be happy to show you how to correctly brush your pet's teeth during your visit with us.
